Second Celine Dion Biopic ‘Celine Before Celine’ On The Way

Last month came word that French studio Gaumont is producing a biopic of the legendary Canadian singer, and now The Hollywood Reporter brings news that Quebecois director Marc-Andre Lavoie is also working on a film about Celine Dion.

“Celine Before Celine” will cover the early life and upbringing of Dion, before she became an international superstar, with production set to begin in 2020.

The film has the support of Dion’s family, including her mother Therese, who reportedly gave the director access to archives and testimonies.

“In my entire career, I’ve never met someone as kind, warm and authentic as Celine, and we’ll be forever grateful that she believes so strongly in our team to tell the real story [that’s] never been told before,” Lavoie said.

Celine Dion also sent a letter to Lavoie and the “Celine Before Celine” production team, writing, ”I wanted to let you know just how much I was touched by the film that you are preparing. With your unique approach, you managed to seize the essence of a period that is very dear to my heart.”

The other Celine biopic, “The Power of Love” is slated for a 2020 release.

CELINE DION RESPONDS TO ICM PARTNERS CLAIMS AS REPORTED IN BILLBOARD MAGAZINE

CELINE DION RESPONDS TO ICM PARTNERS CLAIMS AS REPORTED IN BILLBOARD MAGAZINE

February 15, 2019 (Las Vegas, Nevada)

Celine Dion’s management, CDA Productions (Las Vegas) Inc., is refuting the story that ran in Billboard on February 13, 2019, concerning a supposed ICM Partners’ internal memo. The article quotes the memo as stating that Ms. Dion refused to pay the commissions she owes to Rob Prinz and the agency from a touring deal that she signed in 2017. The article also states that ICM dropped Ms. Dion as a client as a result.

CDA has indicated that they have no choice but to respond to the untruths that were alleged in the ICM memo, to first and foremost protect the integrity of Ms. Dion who has been publicly harmed by these false statements. CDA reports that ICM and Mr. Prinz did not resign. Ms. Dion terminated them in writing on May 7, 2018. CDA also reports that Ms. Dion is not refusing to pay millions of dollars in commissions from the touring deal.

“I’m sad and disappointed by this false report that I’m refusing to pay ICM or Rob Prinz. I know that my team has made several very fair and generous offers to them and we really put a lot of effort in trying to work things out," said Celine Dion.

CDA Productions (Las Vegas) Inc. and Celine Dion have no further comments.

ICM Partners Sues Celine Dion For Unpaid Commission On $500 Million Deal

ICM Partners has dropped Celine Dion as a client, after she failed to pay commission on her concerts stemming from a deal signed in 2017, according to an internal memo obtained by Billboard.

Celine Dion, 50, has been represented by Rob Prinz, currently partner/co-head of worldwide concerts at ICM, for 30 years, since the beginning of her career. According to the memo, ICM will no longer be representing Dion, and will be initiating legal proceedings in order to receive that compensation.

"As many of you are aware, Rob Prinz has represented Celine Dion for over 30 years (since the beginning of her career), including her unprecedented $500 Million, multi-year touring and performing deal which she signed in 2017," the memo reads. "Unfortunately, Ms. Dion is refusing to pay the balance of commissions she owes the agency on this historic deal. Please know that we have made every effort to amicably resolve this matter. While we continue to admire and respect her extraordinary talent as an artist, regrettably we are left with no choice but to initiate a legal proceeding to secure the compensation we are owed, and as such we will no longer be representing her" .

Celine Dion announced last September that her longtime residency at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas would be coming to an end in 2019 after eight years. Across two separate stints -- the first spanning 2003-2007 -- she owns the two highest-grossing Vegas residencies of all time, according to Billboard Boxscore. The first Vegas run grossed $385.1 million across 714 shows, while the most recent, which just came to an end, grossed $245.5 million across 375 shows.

Her 2018 summer tour grossed $56.5 million across 22 shows, according to Billboard Boxscore.

A biopic on the icon, called The Power of Love, is slated to arrive in 2020.

Unforgettable moment with fantastic @celinedion few minutes before her incredible Las Vegas show!

Montreal quartet Quartom got the opportunity of a lifetime. Not only did they get to meet Canadian pop icon Céline Dion backstage at her Las Vegas residency, but they also got to sing for her. And even better, she joins in and harmonizes with them.

In what the group described as an impromptu moment after they posed for photos with Dion, whom they call "the Queen of Las Vegas," the group starts singing Thoinot Arbeau's 1589 composition, "Belle qui tiens ma vie." Celine Dion soon gets swept away by the tune and joins in briefly.

EXCLUSIVE :Celine Dion Biopic 'The Power of Love' Is Coming In 2020

“The Power of Love” (working title), a $23 million music-filled fiction film inspired by the life Canadian singer Celine Dion, is in the works from French studio Gaumont.

French studio Gaumont said Thursday that its upcoming Celine Dion film will not be a biopic but a fictional “homage” that draws heavily from the details of the singer’s life and uses many of her hit songs.

The film will be directed by Valerie Lemercier, who will also star as a character inspired by Dion. Lemercier plays “Aline,” a young woman who grows up in a large Canadian family, is discovered as a major talent in her teens, becomes a global sensation and experiences the tragedy of losing her husband, just as happened to Dion.

One of the highest-profile French films slated for 2020, “The Power of Love” is the latest project to tell the story of a celebrity singer, following smash hit “Bohemian Rhapsody,” about the late Freddie Mercury, and upcoming “Rocket Man,” about Elton John. “The Power of Love” will boast some of Dion’s biggest hits: “All by Myself,” “My Heart Will Go On” and “I’m Alive.” She and her record company have authorized the project and given rights to her songs.

Edouard Weil at Rectangle Productions, the Paris-based banner behind “Climax,” is producing, in association with Laurent Zeitoun (“The Intouchables,” “Ballerina”) and Caramel Films (“Ballerina”).

“The Power of Love” chronicles Dion’s life from her birth and modest upbringing in Quebec in the 1960s to her extraordinary rise to fame as a teen, and also her relationships with her manager and husband, René Angélil, and her family.

Gaumont’s Cecile Gaget said the film would be “a potential box office hit accessible to independent distributors. ” Gaumont, which co-produces and represents the film in international markets, will handle the French release on December  2, 2020.

“The Power of Love” will shoot mainly in French and is set to start lensing in March for 18 weeks in France, Spain, Canada and Las Vegas. Lemercier, who has directed several successful films including “Palais Royal!” and “50 Is the New 30,” said she was inspired by Dion’s strength and determination.

The actress-turned-director said she was touched by Dion’s grief following the death of her husband and started reading and watching everything about the singer, Angélil, and Dion’s mother, Thérèse. “I discovered the strength of their love story and their great humor, and I better understood how the alchemy of their three individual ambitions made an unwanted, little girl the greatest star on the planet,” Lemercier said.

Gaget said Lemercier also had a successful career doing one-woman shows at big venues in Paris. “Valerie Lemercier is impressive onstage. She’s a powerhouse who knows how to move and how to dance,” Gaget said. “And she’s an perfectionist and an overachiever in many ways like Dion.”

“The Power of Love’s” key crew includes Catherine Leterrier (“Coco Before Chanel,” “From the Land of the Moon”), production designer Emmanuelle Duplay (“120 BPM”) and choreographer Eric Martin (Cirque du Soleil).
