Antoinette Haselhorst’s new
book ‘Reflections on Nelson Mandela: Icon of Peace’ is a collection of
photographs and a series of tributes from many celebrities, including
Céline Dion. All give their responses to the question: “What do you think
society, mankind and humanity can learn from Nelson Mandela’s values and
virtues?” Proceeds from the book go to Nelson Mandela Children’s
Hospital.
Rolihlahla "Nelson" Mandela was born on the 18th July
1918 in Qunu, South Africa. As the youngest son of a respected African
chief, Rolihlahla was offered the opportunity to go to school. Here he
was named "Nelson" by one of his teachers. Mandela eventually studied
at both the University of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand
and qualified in law, setting up a law practice in Johannesburg with his
friend Walter Sisulu. It was the injustices he dealt with on a daily
basis that began to influence him.
"I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society
in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal
opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve.
But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die." - Nelson Mandela
