Celine Dion reached a new level of superstardom in 2017, a year that found her emerging from bereavement to greet the public as a new independent woman. Her powerful rendition of “My Heart Will Go On” at May’s Billboard Music Awards still had critics buzzing as they composed year-end highlight lists, and retrospectives of Titanic’s 20th anniversary led to a newfound respect for the film’s end credits song among cultural observers. She became a symbol of age inclusivity in fashion, released her own handbag collection, and rounded out the year by entering the recording studio in Vegas and preparing to resume her Céline residency at the Colosseum.
Dion also returned to her soundtrack roots by recording “How Does a Moment Last Forever” this year for Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, 16 years after her duet with Peabo Bryson on the theme from Disney’s 1991 animated version. The latter song, chosen for her to record by her late husband René Angélil, broke the Quebec native into the English-speaking market. Angélil was also the first person to recognize that “My Heart Will Go On,” first played for Dion by composer James Horner on a piano in a suite at Caesars Palace, could launch Dion into superstardom.
Recording “How Does a Moment Last Forever” was a career landmark for a different reason. Dion had a hard time deciding to record it, as it reminded her of Angélil’s involvement with the decision to record the 1991 theme. She went ahead with it and had been included both Beauty and the Beast songs in her most recent Colosseum sets. She also released "Un peu de nous", a French-language compilation album based on her live sets, which stayed at the top of France’s sales chart for four weeks. Dion ended the year recording new material in Vegas at Studio at the Palms with producer Stephan Moccio, the co-writer of her hit “A New Day Has Come.”
Dion’s day as a fashion icon has definitely come. Under the guidance of stylist Law Roach, Dion began sporting creations by top designers and making big splashes at red carpets and awards shows. She partnered with Canada’s Bugati to create her own fashion line, with handbags, luggage and accessories designed for collections with musically inspired names such as the Vibrato, Pizzicato, and Cavatina Collections. She ended her year in fashion by teaming up with Nordstrom for a holiday promotional video, altering lyrics to “The Christmas Song” (“Chestnuts roasting in my new handbag.”) while showing off a handbag from her Octave Collection.
Most recently it was announced that French filmmaker Valérie Lemercier signed on to direct (and possibly star in) the first official biopic of Dion, from her beginnings as an adolescent with a preternatural singing talent to the star she is today. Meanwhile, fans can count on catching up with Celine in Céline through June at the 4,300-seat Colosseum, where she’ll dazzle in designs by Atelier Versace, Schiaparelli, Elie Saab and Mugler, and demonstrate why she was born to be a star with every singing performance.
